Abstract

Mangrove degradation in coastal areas poses a serious threat to ecosystem balance and the socio-economic resilience of communities. Dusun Uwe in Masawoi Village faces mangrove degradation due to wood exploitation, land conversion, and limited ecological awareness. This study aims to examine community perceptions of mangrove degradation to understand utilization patterns and participation in conservation efforts. A descriptive qualitative approach was applied through interviews, observations, and documentation with 30 selected informants. Findings indicate that while the community recognizes mangroves' physical functions, ecological and economic roles remain underappreciated. Utilization patterns are dominated by practical needs such as firewood and building materials, although some mangrove-based business innovations have emerged. Participation in conservation varies, influenced by information access, training, and economic incentives. The findings emphasize the need for strengthened education, economic diversification, and local institutional development through collaboration. Adaptive and inclusive mangrove management programs are recommended to enhance community engagement in conservation and welfare improvement.
