Abstract

The activities of porters in Mardika Market, Ambon City, reflect the urban socio-economic dynamics where many students from underprivileged families work as porters to finance their education. This study aims to describe the activities of student porters, the driving factors, and the impact on their academic and social lives. The research was conducted using a descriptive qualitative approach through interviews, observation, and documentation. The results reveal that students are able to manage their time between studying and working, carrying loads of 10-50 kg, and earning additional income from various jobs in the market. This work is performed flexibly without disrupting their lectures. These findings highlight the informal sector’s role as an economic solution for students, strengthening their character, independence, and social networks. The implication is the need for policy support from universities and government to provide protection and empowerment for student informal workers, ensuring balance between education and work
