Abstract

Prolonged TikTok use among university students may affect mental health and academic outcomes, yet evidence from Indonesian medical students remains limited. This study aimed to analyze the effect of TikTok screen time on generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and academic achievement among medical students at Universitas Prima Indonesia in 2026. This analytic observational study with a cross-sectional design involved 115 students of the 2023 cohort selected through convenience sampling. TikTok screen time was measured as daily usage duration, anxiety was assessed with the GAD-7 questionnaire, and academic achievement was measured by self-reported cumulative grade point average (GPA). Data were analyzed using Spearman correlation and simple linear regression in SPSS version 26. The mean screen time was 370.28 minutes per day, and 27.8% of respondents used TikTok for more than 8 hours daily. The mean GAD-7 score was 9.96 and the mean GPA was 3.55. Screen time showed a strong positive correlation with GAD-7 scores (rs = 0.751; p < 0.001) and a very strong negative correlation with GPA (rs = −0.835; p < 0.001). Regression analysis showed that screen time explained 58.8% of the variance in GAD-7 scores and 71.3% of the variance in GPA (both p < 0.001). In conclusion, TikTok screen time is significantly associated with higher anxiety and lower academic achievement. Because of the cross-sectional design and uncontrolled confounders, these findings indicate association rather than causation.
