Abstract

Background: Cataract is an opacity of the eye lens and remains the leading cause of blindness worldwide, including Indonesia. The incidence of cataracts is influenced by various degenerative and systemic risk factors such as age, sex, and diabetes mellitus (DM) comorbidity. Objectives: To determine the profile of cataract patients based on age, sex, and diabetes mellitus comorbidity at RS Islam Muhammadiyah Sumberrejo in 2024. Methods: This study employed a descriptive observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 175 cataract patients at RS Islam Muhammadiyah Sumberrejo in 2024, selected via purposive sampling. Data analysis was performed using descriptive univariate analysis with statistical software. Results: The distribution of cataract patients was dominated by females with 94 patients (53.7%) compared to males with 81 patients (46.3%). Based on age groups, the highest incidence was found in the 51–60 years old range (39.4%), followed by the 61–70 years old group (33.1%). Regarding comorbidities, the majority of patients did not have diabetes mellitus, totaling 143 patients (81.7%), while 32 patients (18.3%) presented with diabetes mellitus comorbidity. Conclusions: The characteristics of cataract patients at RS Islam Muhammadiyah Sumberrejo in 2024 are predominantly female, clustered within the 51–60 age group, and mostly without diabetes mellitus comorbidity.
