This study defines a toxic relationship as an unhealthy dating relationship that affects women physically, emotionally, psychologically, economically, restricts activities, and may involve sexual violence. Data from the Pekanbaru Office of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection (DP3A) recorded 97 cases of physical violence in dating relationships in 2019, increasing to 113 cases in 2020. These figures indicate that violence against women in dating relationships in Pekanbaru is a serious issue. This study aims to describe the communication experiences of women who have been involved in toxic relationships in Pekanbaru. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving five women who had experienced or were experiencing toxic relationships. The analysis was based on Alfred Schutz’s phenomenology and Peter L. Berger’s social construction of reality. The findings reveal that toxic behaviors included excessive control, lack of empathy and trust, verbal and nonverbal abuse, threats, and physical and sexual violence. The because-motive that led women to remain in the relationship was love, while the in-order-to motive was the hope that their partners would change. Some participants ended the relationship, while others stayed and adapted.
